What do I value?

Today's session was all about thinking about our own creed. We looked at Dewey's creed from 1897 which was on one hand pretty archaic and on another it was quite progressive. He focuses a lot on schools being a social community, which still rings true today as schools are in themselves a community, but also often reach out to the local community.
We started to think about words which might sum up our own creed. I found it hard to narrow it down! Here is where I am at right now:
Caring | Love | Respect |
Positive | Curiousity | Fun |
Social | Friendships | Experience |
Nurturing | Inclusion | Diversity |
Achievement | Aspiration | Growth |
Development | happy | Journey |
Reflection | Memories | Calm |
Opportunity | Inspiration | celebration |
Lord only knows how I am going to whittle that down to 3 max for my assignment!
We discussed looking at rigorous evidence and a way to triangulate the evidence:
Personal experience
Theory (educational theory) Additional literature
I liked this quote:
Values are guiding principles in life (Schwartz, 2012 p.17)
I took this to mean that values really give us purpose.
We thought about the word 'integrity' and what that meant. CBR said that a way to get children to understand a value is to think if it in terms of senses - what would it look like, etc.
School have a mission statement, or a set of school values. It is interesting to look at those before you go into your placement and think about what those values mean and how they are seen throughout the day to day of school life.
