Judaism and Buddhism

We first looked at Judaism and thought about using artefacts within lessons.

We started off by being 'biblical archeologists' with sandbox and pictures hidden inside which we had to uncover with a paintbrush. I can totally see the children loving this! You could absolutely do this in other subjects and in slightly different ways - feely bags, slow reveal, etc.

We thought about the 4/5 ways to look at artefacts:

  1. observations (what does it look like / what does it feel like / etc)

  2. Investigations (what do you think it is? What is it used for / etc)

  3. Contextual (how does it fit into the life of the believer / their worship / etc)

  4. Reflective (link between the artifact and the children's lives)

  5. Devotional (experiencing using the artifact - NB. ONLY AT A FAITH SCHOOL)

So with the sand tray activity there were pictures hidden and then we came up with questions about them. Then Sarah gave out a fact sheet so that we could answer our own questions.

We also thought about learning objects - AT 1 & AT 2. Some good stems are:

  • To recognise.....

  • To be able to.....

  • To know that......

  • To understand.....

  • To reflect on.....

NOTE - LEARNING OBJECTIVES ARE ABOUT THE LEARNING NOT THE ACTIVITY!

We moved onto Buddhism...

We started off with a lovely meditation. Heaven!

Covered off a bit about the 4 Noble Truths and the Eightfold path. I liked the way that Sarah had the path divided into Wisdom, Morality & Concentration. Much easier to remember like that!

Slightly can't believe that that is all the RE we are going to have. Bish Bash Bosh...... Just goes to show how much subject knowledge you have to get on the job and by yourself.
