We started off this lecture finishing off about knowledge from last time.

A few new words:

  • Epistemology - the study of knowledge. Understanding how knowledge is acquired. This informs how you teach.

  • Ontology - how you see yourself in the world in relation to others.

  • Pedagogy - (The word Katherine Rundell can't say!!!). This is the method of teaching - how you teach.

When we talked about what is knowledge - and discussed how knowing what the child needs comes down to the relationship the teacher has with the class.

Types of knowledge

  1. Propositional - knowledge OF something. Facts you share with children.

  2. Procedural - knowledge about HOW. It is experiential and trying stuff out.

  3. Personal - this is 1st hand experience. We rely on children being aware of things like hunger, thirst, being too hot, etc. This isn't always the case and we might have to help children label what they are feeling.

  4. Tacit - this is implicit knowledge. A gut feeling. This is where our values (that old bird again) come in. This is often developed though our connection with others.

The rest of the session was going through the assignment. TBH - I can't really give that much brain space until after the presentation is done!
