What is reflection? My takeaway from this is mainly about being able to look at some of the definitions and find one that resonates with me. Then for the assignment, I need to point out that for the purpose of the essay, I will be using 'xxxx....' as my definition.

Masters is the area I am viewing with most anxiety. It's not something which can be learned, but something which needs to be examined and understood.
Teachers are increasingly taking on a role of a facilitator. Children have loads of places where they can get their information from. Our job is becoming more of what they can do with that knowledge. We are there to encourage curiosity.
Look up Freire's (1999) "Banking Model of Education"
Observations: See these as a great opportunity to reflect and improve and a time to shine. Tutors will frequently ask "tell me about their learning".
Key Thinker: John Dewsey 1859-1952
How does the info impact you?
What will you do with that knowledge?
How do you make sense of the experience?
To make sense of something.
Reflection gives us a sense of purpose
Our lessons will differ from teacher to teacher because of:
Past experiences
personal skills
knowledge
subject preference
values
knowing the children
Consider a growth mindset - Look up Carol Dweck:
Mirrors - Bassot 2016
Peers can help with the blindspot in reflection.
Magnified mirror - looking at the detail
Driving - looking behind and seeing where you are going.
Bathroom mirror - keeping everything the same.
Funny mirror - having a distorted image or yourself - it might not be quite as it seems.
Schön (1983) - meaningful conversation. He discusses reflection IN action / reflection ON action. There is also the argument for reflection FOR action - the what will you do/now what?
When you are reflecting on a lesson, it is important to look at the WHOLE picture:
Learning outcomes
environment
resources
groupings
hook
contextualised
Reading critically:
Purpose - what is it all about?
Claims - what is the author claiming?
Secure - who is the author? What is their background? What are their sources?
Challenge - what are your own thoughts?
Impact - how is reading this going to change/improve/validate your practise?
Conclusions - what are your conclusions?
